as entertainments for myself.
Maybe other people's writings
begin in much the same way.
With no commercial purpose,
no sight of an eager publisher,
these stories took off mostly
with no fixed destination,
contrary to the advice for
would-be writers that appears
from time to time in the media.
Novellas lie waiting in the
computer for an airing to be
arranged somehow.
It would be good to know if on
reading one story you decide to
try another and intend to watch
out for the others yet to be
posted.

The characters and events in these

Jan Veevers has been a good
neighbour of mine for about seven
years. Reticence and obfuscation
are the two characteristics of Jan's
relationship with all of us. I have
never been certain whether Jan as
an adolescent abandoned the circus
or a life at sea in favour of a
publicity and promotions department
of a national newspaper. From this
to a variety of part-time jobs as
an artists' model, a singer and
harmonica player with a short-lived
pop-band, into public relations and
thence into free-lancing in the
promotion of fashion companies,
textile and clothing manufacturers
- work that took Jan to many
countries and the tedium of airports
and air travel which, Jan says, is
where the therapy of making stories
began. J.W.
